MANATEE — After running unopposed in the 2008 general election, Sheriff Brad Steube is expected to take the oath of office today for the first time as an elected officer.
Steube has been sworn in as sheriff before, after being appointed by Gov. Charlie Crist in March 2007 following the retirement of former Sheriff Charlie Wells.
Wells retired with a year and a half left on his term, saying he wanted to give Steube the chance to run the agency prior to a general election.
Steube set a record for fundraising for a Manatee sheriff candidate, but he didn’t end up needing it. No one threw their hat in the ring to run against him.
Today, Judge Marc Gilner will swear in Steube at the Manatee County Civic Center for his first elected term in office. The ceremony will be at 9 a.m.
Numerous dignitaries have been invited to attend the ceremony, but Steube said he is most looking forward to having his eldest son in attendance this time around.
During his last swearing-in, Greg Steube was serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq. He has since returned from duty, and Steube said he will attend.
“Last time he was in Iraq and couldn’t be here, so it will be great to have him there,” Steube said.
