The scoop: The Class 2B Cougars hung tough against Class 5A Venice in their Kickoff Classic before the defense wore down in a 44-21 defeat. Cardinal Mooney was led by senior running back Steve Ierulli (183 yards on 30 carries) and senior quarterback Robby Lyons, who completed his first 10 passes and tossed touchdowns to Dylan Knopfke and Bo Ceravolo. On defense, Cardinal Mooney has moved Grant Leonard from safety to linebacker and will try Tyler Mould at strong safety. Under new head coach Hal Bennett, Class 3A LaBelle lost its Kickoff Classic against Immokalee 33-0 but trailed only 7-0 at halftime. The Cowboys edged the Cougars 24-21 in last season's opener at Cardinal Mooney.
The score: Cardinal Mooney 28, LaBelle 12
