The University of South Florida has set an ambitious course for expansion of baccalaureate and graduate access to top-quality programs conducted by an outstanding faculty in the Manatee/Sarasota region in response to our community's desire and demand. Our 2006-2011 Strategic Plan calls for nearly doubling our faculty from 52 to 90. This fall we open with 66 faculty positions. In 2000, USF offered 19 academic programs; now there are over 40 programs with plans for more. Student enrollment has more than doubled to 4,500 in AY 2008 from 2,000 in AY 2000.

At this point in time, I can hardly speak after receipt of my portfolio statement for last month showing that this Congress has managed to wipe out nearly a quarter of my entire life’s savings because of their total incompetence. Now, if the huge drop in the DOW hit me in this way, I am sure there are hundreds of thousands of families in this country who are dealing with similar of losses in different degrees.

What a wonderfully enlightening experience it was!

I was reading a couple of recent Letters to the Editor regarding Vern Buchanan, wealthy local gent, auto dealer whom some folks think “might of gotten” elected to Congress a couple of years back. Might of gotten elected, might not have. Maybe we “lost” 18,000 votes last election, maybe we didn’t.

If selecting Sarah Palin as his running mate were an attempt by John McCain to sway women’s votes over to his ticket, he did not demonstrate an ability to read modern day, currently vital, intelligent women. She of double talk and half truth, who glories in getting off a few zingers instead of answering questions asked of her, does little to draw the vote of women I know to the Republican ticket. Obama and Biden are conducting themselves as gentlemen compared to the gutter-snipe tactics of this hockey mom from Alaska.

Has our school district totally lost its mind? A student, Zachary Sharples, gets an in-school suspension for having a Mohawk haircut to show his support of the Tampa Bay Rays. Angela Essig, the district’s director of secondary schools, states that a “Mohawk is an unusual haircut, and it draws comments from the kids and it’s hard for teachers to calm them down.”
